This project; while being the most fun to do and turning out quite well in my final piece, was the most ‘off the cuff’ yet. What I mean is I really wasn’t sure where is was going because I didn’t really understand the brief; the reasoning being that there wasn’t really any brief to speak of. Research began by researching different forms of photography and how I could translate these techniques into my work and how I could slot photography into my ‘day in the life’. My time plan was more or less exactly how this project worked out for me which is positive. Now knowing this, I would have liked to have made more time for myself to finally publish my photo book but I am happy with my final piece regardless.

This project I decided to throw myself into the deep end of something fairly new to me, photography. Of course I’d taken photographs before but never for a deadline or any real reasoning, so my time planning was crucial. My willingness to learn was probably the main reason for success in this project because this was quite a learning curve for me personally.

As I said, this project was a learning experience for me, I taught myself the in’s and out’s of a DSLR camera and how to edit photographs in photoshop; something I’d not really delved too deeply into before. Mostly this has been a broadening of my skills, which is definitely a positive step in my professional career.

I don’t think my project would look the same without my DSLR camera and Macbook. This is because, while letting me create and use high quality photos, I also had the freedom that having my own equipment gave me. Being able to have these things with me outside of college was a very important part of this project for me.

If I were to repeat this project, there is very little I would change. the only adjustment I would make is that I would try to make the time to publish my book, that is really the only imperfection of my project.

Evaluation

Rationale, Proposal

In previous projects I’ve been using Photoshop and InDesign to produce my work and I would like to continue this trend in my FMP to further improve my skillset.

My project idea surfaced when I recorded a ‘day in the life’ and realised just how much I move around. Most of my days consists of either walking, running, or playing video games. I wanted to be able to record movement without the use of GIF’s or videos because I feel that there are more beautiful and artistic ways to show movement.

My project centres around the concept of creating a book that depicts different forms of motion through still image.

Using my photography skills and graphical skills, I plan to make a collation of photographs and then create a book exhibiting them all. The book will solely contain these images. Using Adobe InDesign I will make a layout and design for the book and will submit the final book in the appropriate formats. If I can make the time, I will try to publish the book, but as it stands, this will not be the case.

Photography Research

Very little written evidence went into the photography aspect of this project as I wanted to learn my way around a camera in my own time without being told what does what, experimenting with the setting until I take a photograph of any use in my project, this lack of research made for quite an eye opening and interesting learning curve the whole way through this project.

I researched into what certain settings were just by doing a quick google search for it; e.g. ISO, Exposure.

Photography

In the previous weeks I have composed quite a large collection of images to use for this project; all of them portraying movement in some way shape or form. Purely using trial and error, I learnt how to use exposure and focus in different ways to create some very interesting photographs which I have edited and compiled into a photo book. I have created several action sequences which are a collection of separate images collected in one using photoshop so that you see can see every stage of movement in one image. I have also captured the light trails of cars at night with some very interesting results.

Unit 9 Evaluation

When I was given the brief for unit 9, the first thing I jumped to was the logo, as I’d had several ideas in my sketchbook for a while and was finally given the opportunity to bring those ideas forward and turn them into something tangible. I started with putting together typography and shapes to brainstorm ideas, then chopped and changed the letters ‘A’ and ‘S’ and finished with a very modern and sleek final logo which I am very happy with.

My business card quickly followed, I used segments of the typography in my logo to make a pattern that would then sit behind my logo to create the back of the business card. On the front of the business card I used the same pattern as a backdrop behind my name and contact details. I am very happy with my finalized logo and business card and don’t think I would do anything differently if I had to repeat this project.

As for my portfolio, I decided to use Behance as I’d heard from a few friends that it was a good piece of software to sure visual work in a simple format. I decided to use a couple of pieces from previous projects, including my box design from my CoLab project and my double page spread from The Others project, two of my favourite pieces of work since I began studying at PCA. I also decided to present my website designs for SDCREN from The Future project in a 3D way, as if it is coming out of a Mac and iPhone screen. I also presented my business card in a 3D way, alongside my logo.

As a part of this project I had to create a LinkedIn account which went smoothly and I have now linked my blog and Behance to the account. Hopefully this might push the boat out somewhat so I may be able to have more opportunities and contacts in the future.

We also had to sign up for and attend 2 HE workshops, I decided to sign up for Graphics and Glass. I decided to sign up for graphics because it is a real possibility that I may sign up for this course. As for the glass however, I decided to sign up for glass as a fun skill building activity. I’d always wanted to try it so I jumped at the opportunity accordingly.

Movement.

ˈmuːvm(ə)nt/
noun
  1. an act of moving.
  2. a group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, or artistic ideas.

The most important thing in life for me is movement. Whether I’m walking, running, playing football or on my Xbox, I spend a lot of my free time moving in one way or another because it makes me happy. This is why I think that the word ‘movement’ should be what surrounds my Final Major Project.

Movement in artwork is often referred to as ‘Kinetic Art’ and ‘Op Art’, an art form that was spear-headed by the likes of Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely in the 1960’s. These artists used geometric shapes to distort the perception of the viewer and give the illusion of movement.
